COMMON GOOD: Muar and Tangkak expected to benefit from new interchange

TANGKAK: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday urged highway concessionaires to always ensure that they offer the best services to the users.

He said this was to ensure that highway users were pleased with the services that they get.

“For example, the efforts by PLUS Malaysia Bhd to upgrade the rest and recreation areas in Pagoh and Machap on the North-South Expressway (NSE) has benefited road users and projected a good image for the country, especially for Johor, which is fast developing with the presence of the Iskandar Development Region and tourist attractions like Legoland Malaysia,” said Muhyiddin.

He said this in his speech at the opening of the NSE’s new Bukit Gambir interchange and toll plaza here yesterday.

Also present were Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar and PLUS Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sheriff Mohd Kassim.

Muhyiddin said the opening of the Bukit Gambir interchange would help to disperse and ease traffic congestion at the Tangkak and Pagoh interchanges.

The construction of the RM108 million interchange, which began in August 2010, was fully funded by PLUS Malaysia while the land acquisition cost of RM7 million was funded by the Federal Government.

“The opening of the interchange would greatly benefit the people of Muar and Tangkak, and would provide access to small and medium entrepreneurs in the area,” said Muhyiddin.

He said the project showed the government always prioritises the people’s needs first.

“This also proves the success of the collaboration between the public and private sectors in developing the country’s infrastructure. I am confident that the interchange’s strategic location will also contribute to the local economy.”

The new interchange will be open to traffic fromtoday.
